1
EN Before the festival day of the pasch, Jesus knowing that his hour had come, that he should pass out of this world to the Father: having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them unto the end.
^1
[!note]- Before the festival day of the pasch…
This was the fourth and last pasch of the ministry of Christ, and according to the common computation, was in the thirty-third year of our Lord: and in the year of the world 4036. Some chronologers are of opinion that our Saviour suffered in the thirty-seventh year of his age: but these different opinions on this subject are of no consequence.
2
LA Et cœna facta, cum diabolus jam misisset in cor ut traderet eum Judas Simonis Iscariotæ:
EN And when supper was done (the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray him),
^2
3
EN knowing that the Father had given him all things into his hands and that he came from God and goes to God,
^3
4
EN he rose from supper and laid aside his garments and, having taken a towel, girded himself.
^4
5
EN After that, he put water into a basin and began to wash the feet of the disciples and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.
^5
6
GR ἔρχεται οὖν πρὸς Σίμωνα Πέτρον: λέγει αὐτῷ: κύριε, σύ μου νίπτεις τοὺς πόδας;
EN He came therefore to Simon Peter. And Peter said to him: Lord, do you wash my feet?
^6
7
LA Respondit Jesus, et dixit ei: Quod ego facio, tu nescis modo: scies autem postea.
EN Jesus answered and said to him: What I do, you know not now; but you shall know hereafter.
^7
8
LA Dicit ei Petrus: Non lavabis mihi pedes in æternum. Respondit ei Jesus: Si non lavero te, non habebis partem mecum.
EN Peter said to him: You shall never wash my feet, Jesus answered him: If I wash you not, you shall have no part with me.
^8
9
EN Simon Peter said to him: Lord, not only my feet, but also my hands and my head.
^9
10
EN Jesus said to him: He that is washed needs not but to wash his feet, but is clean wholly. And you are clean, but not all.
^10
11
LA Sciebat enim quisnam esset qui traderet eum; propterea dixit: Non estis mundi omnes.
EN For he knew who he was that would betray him; therefore he said: You are not all clean.
^11
12
GR Ὅτε οὖν ἔνιψεν τοὺς πόδας αὐτῶν καὶ ἔλαβεν τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀνέπεσεν πάλιν, εἶπεν αὐτοῖς: γινώσκετε τί πεποίηκα ὑμῖν;
LA Postquam ergo lavit pedes eorum, et accepit vestimenta sua, cum recubuisset iterum, dixit eis: Scitis quid fecerim vobis?
EN Then after he had washed their feet and taken his garments, being set down again, he said to them: Do you know what I have done to you?
^12
13
EN You call me Master and Lord. And you say well: for so I am.
^13
14
EN If then I being your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; you also ought to wash one another’s feet.
^14
15
EN For I have given you an example, that as I have done to you, so you do also.
^15
16
EN Amen, amen, I say to you: The servant is not greater than his lord: neither is the apostle greater than he that sent him.
^16
17
EN If you know these things, you shall be blessed if you do them.
^17
18
LA Non de omnibus vobis dico: ego scio quos elegerim; sed ut adimpleatur Scriptura: Qui manducat mecum panem, levabit contra me calcaneum suum.
EN I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen. But that the scripture may be fulfilled: He that eats bread with me shall lift up his heel against me,
^18
19
LA Amodo dico vobis, priusquam fiat: ut cum factum fuerit, credatis quia ego sum.
EN at present I tell you, before it come to pass: that when it shall come to pass, you may believe that I am he.
^19
20
LA Amen, amen dico vobis: qui accipit si quem misero, me accipit; qui autem me accipit, accipit eum qui me misit.
EN Amen, amen, I say to you, he that receives whomsoever I send receives me: and he that receives me receives him that sent me.
^20
21
EN When Jesus had said these things, he was troubled in spirit; and he testified, and said: Amen, amen, I say to you, one of you shall betray me.
^21
22
EN The disciples therefore looked one upon another, doubting of whom he spoke.
^22
23
LA Erat ergo recumbens unus ex discipulis ejus in sinu Jesu, quem diligebat Jesus.
EN Now there was leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.
^23
24
EN Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him and said to him: Who is it of whom he speaks?
^24
25
GR ἀναπεσὼν ἐκεῖνος οὕτως ἐπὶ τὸ στῆθος τοῦ Ἰησοῦ λέγει αὐτῷ: κύριε, τίς ἐστιν;
EN He therefore, leaning on the breast of Jesus, said to him: Lord, who is it?
^25
26
EN Jesus answered: He it is to whom I shall reach bread dipped. And when he had dipped the bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.
^26
27
LA Et post buccellam, introivit in eum Satanas.
EN And after the morsel, Satan entered into him. And Jesus said to him: That which you do, do quickly.
^27
[!note]- That which you do, do quickly…
It is not a license, much less a command, to go about his treason: but a signification to him that Christ would not hinder or resist what he was about, do it as soon as he pleased: but was both ready and desirous to suffer for our redemption.
28
EN Now no man at the table knew to what purpose he said this unto him.
^28
29
EN For some thought, because Judas had the purse, that Jesus had said to him: Buy those things which we have need of for the festival day: or that he should give something to the poor.
^29
30
LA Cum ergo accepisset ille buccellam, exivit continuo. Erat autem nox.
EN He therefore, having received the morsel, went out immediately. And it was night.
^30
31
EN When he therefore had gone out, Jesus said: Now is the Son of man glorified; and God is glorified in him.
^31
32
LA Si Deus clarificatus est in eo, et Deus clarificabit eum in semetipso: et continuo clarificabit eum.
EN If God be glorified in him, God also will glorify him in himself: and immediately will he glorify him.
^32
33
EN Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You shall seek me. And as I said to the Jews: Where I go you cannot come; so I say to you now.
^33
34
EN A new commandment I give unto you: That you love one another, as I have loved you, that you also love one another.
^34
35
EN By this shall all men know that you are my disciples, if you have love one for another.
^35
36
LA Dicit ei Simon Petrus: Domine, quo vadis? Respondit Jesus: Quo ego vado non potes me modo sequi: sequeris autem postea.
EN Simon Peter said to him: Lord, where are you going? Jesus answered: Where I go, you can not follow me now: but you shall follow hereafter.
^36
37
LA Dicit ei Petrus: Quare non possum te sequi modo? animam meam pro te ponam.
EN Peter said to him: Why cannot I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.
^37
38
LA Respondit ei Jesus: Animam tuam pro me pones? amen, amen dico tibi: non cantabit gallus, donec ter me neges.
EN Jesus answered him: Will you lay down your life for me? Amen, amen, I say to you, the cock shall not crow, till you deny me thrice.
